Field manual · budget sleep & shelter
Weekend campers get sold numbers: denier, R-value, packed weight. This publication takes those seller figures apart and asks the questions that decide whether a cheap shelter is cheap for a reason — or cheap on purpose.

Five questions cover most weekend-tent decisions. Pick the one your trip is actually asking; each one opens the archive so you can compare similar listings side by side.
Start anywhere below, then work back through the archive by question rather than by brand.

The questions we ask before any price makes sense. Seller figures are quoted as seller claims; nothing here is a lab result.
Weight, thickness and pack figures in a title are usually the seller's own conditions. Ask what was excluded, what size was used and whether a figure applies to the whole set or to one part.
Lifestyle photos shrink or inflate a shelter. Compare listed length, width and packed size against something you already own before trusting the picture.
Look for a stated fabric and floor specification, what is included with the shelter, and anything the listing quietly leaves out.
Basecamp Decoder works from seller-published listings, published standards and general guidance. We publish no hands-on teardown record, so our role is translation and comparison: here is what a figure means, here is the question worth asking, and here is what we still cannot tell you.
